Volunteer Spotlight

Meet Our Extraordinary Volunteer Maria!

Maria was one of the very first people to drink what we call the White Whiskers’ “Kool-Aid”. I believe she was at every town hall. And once we began fundraising, she volunteered at everything. No job was too menial – she accomplished them all with dedication and determination!

Maria is the kind of person you want on your side because when she believes, she BELIEVES! And that kind of positivity is contagious and inspiring. The care she bestows on her ailing mom, and the way she tends to her two rescue grand-pups is remarkable. No one I know possesses the heart and patience, love and commitment I have seen in Maria. Maria is an extraordinary individual, and the fact that she has focused some of her energy on White Whiskers is truly a gift for us.

Maria’s Q & A:

1.  What was the name and type of your very first pet?

My first pet was a goldfish named Goldie

 2.  What got you into this business of loving dogs?

Growing up, my grandparents had a dog. She lived to be 18 1/2. I was hooked. My daughter was young when the dog passed away and soon thereafter we learned she was allergic to animals (luckily she outgrew that). We were all really busy so felt it wouldn’t be fair to get an animal if we didn’t have time for it. Fast forward a few decades and our lives changed where we had the time, and we went to visit the Erie County SPCA.  Although we had been there before, on this particular day I saw a dog and had an unbelievable attraction to him, unlike any other. Needless to say, my daughter was thrilled to have her first dog!! We talked about getting another someday, and in the same year she adopted a second. She went from waiting a lifetime for an animal to being the proud owner of 2 seniors in less than 7 months. The rest is history and they have changed all our lives for the better!

3. Bills or Sabres? Do you find players more attractive if you know they own a dog?

I am a huge Buffalo sports fan, but I am a LIFELONG DIEHARD SABRES Fan!! Win or lose I have never jumped off the bandwagon. I look at a person overall. Attractiveness means different things to different people. To me, the player has a good heart and is a caring person if they own a dog. ️

4.     What was your favorite Whiskers’ event so far?

I learned all about rescues after my daughter adopted the dogs. When Polla told me about her dream I was all in!! I don’t have one favorite event from White Whiskers. I enjoy every one, knowing it’s all for helping the cause and the senior dogs!

Maria, we can’t thank you enough for all of the tireless hours you have put in to our dream and events. We couldn’t do this without you!
