June 2024

Looking to volunteer at the Sanctuary?

We know some of you have waited forever to hear from us, and some of you are brand new. Some of you may have already filled out the volunteer form on our website BUT we still need you to fill out the form below.

If you want to volunteer for Whiskers, please fill out the form below. We are trying to compile a list of awesome folks who want to volunteer once our doors are open. Filling out this form will ensure that you will be on the email list and will receive information about our mandatory volunteer orientation and training. We will talk hours, jobs, etc in the coming weeks. But for now please fill out the form so that we can keep you updated as we get closer to opening our doors!

Sanctuary Update:

It’s hard for us to wrap our arms around the fact that we are just 2 months away from our grand opening weekend!! (The actual date will be coming soon.)

There is still so much to do on our end. NYS came out with new guidelines and regulations for animal shelters. They also designated several million in funds for grants as not all the shelters can afford to make the updates. We applaud this, but it will be a lot of work for many because not all shelters have had the money to keep their facilities in good order. We are lucky – ours is brand new!

Our construction has been expensive, and so we have had to temporarily let go of some of our ambitious hopes and plans for our property. For instance, our volunteer kitchen will remain closed until we can raise the needed $12,000 to make it useable and nice for our visitors. Many of the cabinets are being donated (thank you Kitchen World!)

Our gardens are also on hold although one of our volunteers and the sister of our contractor have offered to see what they can accomplish. And the grand, covered patio we wished for will have to come another day.

That’s OK. The apartment, the guest restrooms and, most importantly, the sanctuary itself, will be finished and ready to go. We will have a 6 ft. tall vinyl fence around the play yard so our pups will be secure. We will have cameras and other safety measures installed. (Thank you Davis Ulmer!!) Our state of the art heating and cooling is ready to go. (Thank you Cellino Plumbing, Heating and Cooling!!) Our walls are heavily insulated to lower our utility bills. We have a new roof, new gutter system and all new bathroom fixtures. We will have a solid concrete pad under our flooring – no more asbestos, dirt and railroad ties!

Our grand opening will be a celebration for everyone, and we have so many people to thank! We don’t have an exact date, but we are close. All of you will be invited. We won’t have any dogs yet because we don’t want them overwhelmed, but you will be able to see what your support has made possible.

Our next newsletter will contain all the details for the opening. We know it’s been a long, long haul. We thank you so much for your patience and continued faith in us. We promise, it will all be worth it!

Help us raise money to build out our volunteer kitchen!

We might be the luckiest cause around. Nichols School’s 7th graders (Class of 2029) chose us as their favorite charity this year! And because of that, they created a very artistic and special jigsaw puzzle. Then they partnered with Buffalo Games which is the largest jigsaw puzzle maker IN THE WORLD!! Buffalo Games produced 3,000 – 300 piece puzzles for us to sell. They are $15 each and White Whiskers receives $12 from the sale of each puzzle!  That is an amazing return for us.

We are going to use the puzzle funds to create our volunteer and guest kitchen. This is where we will bake and cook all kinds of wonderful things as well as hold some free cooking and baking classes and throw some potluck and holiday get-togethers. We will also dedicate our kitchen to Nichols School Class of 2029 and Buffalo Games who made this campaign possible! Ribbon cutting ceremony and placement of a plaque in tribute to our benefactors will transpire. Nichols Class of 2029 and Buffalo Games will always be an important part of the White Whiskers Senior Dog Sanctuary!

If you would like to help us reach our goal and create our kitchen, please contact Polla Milligan at whitewhiskerssds@gmail.com or call 716-713-1093.
