A Message to

Our Friends & Supporters 🐾

As 2026 begins, it is difficult for all of us here at White Whiskers to realize that over a year has passed since we brought in our first pup. That was 10 y/o Wags, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, rescued from a puppy mill by a woman who later had to give him up due to serious illness. He wasn’t well himself, and we were informed he wouldn’t last long. But Wags passed in his sleep three weeks ago, having been with us since November, 2024.

As hard as it is to believe that a year has gone by, so much has been accomplished and so much has happened. Many homeless dogs have come through our doors, some from shelters and some from private homes. Dog Control Officers have called upon us to bring in some senior strays, and dogs liberated from puppy mills have been brought in by compassionate rescuers. As long as we have had the room and the resources, all have been welcomed.

There are restrictions, of course. We are a free-roaming facility with many, many volunteers and visitors from organizations like People Inc., nursing homes and schools. So aggressive pups and those who don’t play well with others cannot be included. As much as it is necessary to adhere to these guidelines, it is still very hard for us to say no.

As of this writing, we have adopted out 23 sweet, senior dogs. They have all gone to wonderful homes – thoroughly vetted and approved of. We know these are successful re-homings because we work to stay in touch. And while our adoption process is tough, our adopters understand that these babies have been through a lot, and the last thing we want is for them to be moved around again.

While saving senior dogs has been our main focus throughout, our other area of attention is our fellow humans. Ours is a sanctuary for canines and people alike, and we are proud to say there is a lot of love here – plenty to go around. Our volunteers truly adore the dogs and lavish attention on them all day long. They work hard to keep everyone fed and clean as well. But they also enthusiastically sign up to cook a feast for our homeless Veterans’ lunch, and to bring dogs to our First Annual Brothers of Mercy Christmas Dog Parade and to attend our classes on dog behavior.

We had the first of what will be many free and open to the public classes, this one on Cybersecurity and Bank Fraud, taught by two of our volunteers. We have also had two successful Pet Loss Group Grief Sessions and intend to continue those on the third Saturday of every month, right here at the sanctuary.

In closing, we want you to know we are just getting started! White Whiskers is a place that unites, not divides us. This is where we can come together for the greater good. And guess what? It’s working! In this, our first year, we have witnessed it, firsthand.

We thank you with everything we’ve got because all of you – our supporters, our donors, our followers – have made White Whiskers possible. We are indebted to you because we get to be here, and a part of something really special.
