๐ŸพVolunteer Spotlight:

Meet Paula Kelman!๐Ÿพ

This month, weโ€™re proud to shine an autumn spotlight on Paula Kelman, who joined the White Whiskers volunteer team less than a year ago and has already made a profound impact.

Paulaโ€™s lifelong love of dogs began decades ago with her own Border Collies, later expanding to Brittanys, Cocker Spaniels, and fostering numerous puppy mill rescues. โ€œBeing foster parents taught me patience and compassion for dogs who had never been socialized or exposed to everyday life,โ€ Paula reflects. Today, she and her husband share their home with two rescuesโ€”Bix, a Cocker Spaniel, and Marzi, a Bichon Frisรฉ.

Her connection to White Whiskers is deeply personal. Years ago, while visiting her friend and our founder, Polla Milligan, during her recovery from a short hospital stay, she first learned about Pollaโ€™s dream of creating a sanctuary for senior dogs. Inspired by that vision, she immediately offered to help spread the word.

Now, Paula lends her expertise by leading dog body language classes, a cornerstone of White Whiskersโ€™ volunteer training. More than 90 volunteers have already benefited from her engaging sessions, which are now required for all new team members. Her classes help volunteers recognize the subtle signals dogs useโ€”whether itโ€™s a tucked tail, a shift in posture, or the look in their eyesโ€”equipping them to respond with greater care and confidence.

โ€œI have known Paula for years,โ€ shares Polla, โ€œand she is one of my favorite people! She brings so much knowledge to her popular training classes and delivers the information with humor, making each seminar both educational and entertaining.โ€

Looking ahead, Paula hopes to work with other volunteers to design new classes on adoption matching, leash and harness training, and companion care programsโ€”always with the goal of improving life for both dogs and the people who love them.

When asked why she volunteers with White Whiskers, Paula explains: โ€œUnlike other sheltersโ€”which also do wonderful workโ€”White Whiskers is unique. We care for senior dogs. Sure, theyโ€™re slower and not as bouncy as puppies. But for many of us, that makes working with them especially rewarding.โ€

๐ŸŒˆIn Loving Memory of Henry
<!–

September brought a difficult goodbye, as we said farewell to our dear Henry. He had developed a terrible cough and stopped eating. An X-ray revealed an enormously enlarged heart. Weโ€™re grateful heโ€™s featured in our calendarโ€”the photo captured during his special shoot is a beautiful reminder of his time with us.

When Henry arrived with five others from a hoarding situation, he didnโ€™t even have a name. We got him the care he needed, gave him a name, and spent countless hours simply holding and loving him. This is why weโ€™re hereโ€”to make whatever time these dogs have left as comforting and love-filled as possible.

Henryโ€™s days were rich with warmth, soft beds, gentle hands, and unwavering affection. His absence is deeply felt throughout the sanctuary.

Run free, Henry. You were so very loved. ๐Ÿพ
