π Message from Founder – One Year of Second Chances πΎ
|
|
|
On November 22, White Whiskers celebrates its 1-year anniversary – 365 days of wagging tails, warm beds, and new beginnings!
Since opening our doors, 16 senior dogs (and counting!) have found loving furever homes. Each adoption is a milestone, not just a match. We take our time to ensure every pup is placed with care, compassion, and the right fit, for them and for their new family.
Adoption at White Whiskers isnβt a transaction, itβs a transition. Many of our dogs arrive needing medical attention:
Along with time, patience, and a whole lot of love.
Thanks to your support, weβve been able to meet those needs and give each dog the dignity they deserve. As we reflect on this first year, weβre filled with gratitude, for our volunteers, donors, adopters, and every single soul whoβs walked through our doors.
πΈ Picassoβs portraits say it bestβevery face tells a story of resilience and hope.

Friends and Supporters,
As the air turns crisp and leaves blanket the ground, gratitude fills every corner of White Whiskers. This season reminds us just how much we have to be thankful for, our devoted volunteers, our generous supporters, and most of all, the senior dogs who remind us daily what unconditional love looks like.
Each day at the sanctuary, we witness small miracles: a shy newcomer finding their courage, an old pup rediscovering play, and countless cozy moments that make our hearts full. November is about celebrating those momentsβand the community that makes them possible.
Weβre so thankful youβre part of our White Whiskers family. Your kindness keeps tails wagging, bowls full, and hearts warm, especially as winter draws near. Together, weβre giving every senior dog the gift of safety, comfort, and love, no matter their age or story.
With endless gratitude, β The White Whiskers Team

πΎVolunteer Spotlight:
Meet Ashley McCormack!πΎ
|
|
|
|
<!–
|
During this month of thanksgiving, we are thrilled to shine our Volunteer Spotlight on Ashley McCormack, a bright and compassionate 24-year-old from Darien who began volunteering at White Whiskers in Mayβand has been bringing smiles (and cuddles!) ever since.
βWhen my mom saw White Whiskers featured on the local news, I looked it up on Facebook and knew I wanted to get involved,β Ashley shared.
A lifelong animal lover, Ashley keeps busy caring for her own small farm filled with chickens, turkeys, peacocks, and goats. In addition to White Whiskers, she also volunteers at the Genesee Animal Shelter.Β I love all animals, but dogs have a special place in my heart,β she says. βI have two at home, a pug named Cuddles and a Boston Terrier named Tiny.β
Ashley participates in White Whiskers through the Self-Direction Services (SDS) program at Arc GLOW, which supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in pursuing meaningful community involvement.
βWhat I love most about White Whiskers,β Ashley explains, βis when the dogs sit on my lap. One day I held Chicoβhe was shakingβand I calmed him down. I just love to cuddle with the dogs.β
Founder Polla Milligan smiles: βThatβs why weβve named Ashley our official cuddler!β
Ashley admits it can be sad to see so many dogs whoβve been unwanted, βbut giving them attention helps them get through their day,β she says. βEven though Iβm in a wheelchair, Iβm able to help and volunteerβand everyone here is so kind and accommodating.β
When asked what sheβd tell someone thinking about volunteering, Ashley doesnβt hesitate:
βI would highly recommend it! It helps older dogs get the love and attention they need, and the people who run the sanctuary are really nice!β
We are deeply grateful to Ashley for her warmth, dedication, and gentle spirit. Volunteers like her make White Whiskers a truly special placeβone wag, one cuddle, and one act of kindness at a time.
For more information on volunteering, please reply back to this email or reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator Bailey at whitewhiskerssocial@gmail.com

π In Loving Memory of Bishop and Betty Boop
|
|
|
|
|
Weβre heartbroken to share that we had to say goodbye to Bishop and Betty Boop in October.
Bishop was scheduled for a vet visit, and during his exam, it became clear that his heart was too weak and he was suffering more than we realized. As hard as it was, we had to make the compassionate decision to let him go peacefully.
Bishop wasnβt always the easiest, his tendency to nip kept us on our toes but we truly cared for him, and he was loved right up until the end.
So many of our volunteers spent time with him, worked to earn his trust, and made his days brighter.
Betty Boop passed away on her way to the vet. She had been battling congestive heart failure, and despite all the care and love she received, her little heart simply gave out on the car ride.
Betty came to us as a stray, her nails were almost growing back into her paws, and she had barely any hair. But during her time with us, she was surrounded by comfort, kindness, and so much love. She blossomed into the beautiful soul we all came to know and adore.
