June 2026

May was a month full of growth, compassion, and connection here at White Whiskers Senior Dog Sanctuary. As spring settled in, the sanctuary stayed busy with volunteers spending extra time with the dogs and generous community members stopping by to learn more about our mission.

We continued focusing on enrichment and quality time for our senior residents, ensuring each dog received the love, comfort, and individualized care they deserve. From sunny walks to quiet afternoons outside and one-on-one connection, these simple moments continue to remind us why this work matters so deeply.

Β  Β Β  Β

We are also incredibly grateful for the ongoing support from our community. Donations, volunteering, event participation, and advocacy all played a vital role in helping us provide a safe and loving home for senior dogs. May also brought opportunities to strengthen relationships with local supporters and organizations who share our commitment to giving older dogs the second chances they deserve.

Β  Β

We had the pleasure of welcoming a wonderful group from Elmwood Franklin’s 7th grade class, who stopped by to learn more about our mission and vision at the Sanctuary. Their curiosity, kindness, and thoughtful questions made for a truly meaningful visit.

We were also honored to give Assemblyman Paul Bologna a tour of our facility and share the work we do each day in support of senior dogs. Visits like these help strengthen community understanding and support for our mission, and we are grateful for the opportunity to connect with community leaders.

Alongside this, our team has been preparing for upcoming inspections tied to New York State’s updated regulations for rescues and shelters. We’ve been reviewing and strengthening our facility practices, care protocols, and standard operating procedures. While it has kept us busy, we truly welcome these changes, as higher standards help ensure all rescue animals receive safe, consistent, high-quality care.

We are also closely monitoring three hospice dogs (Hershey, Eva, and Royce), each facing a terminal illness. Our focus remains on keeping them comfortable, loved, and surrounded by peace in this final chapter. Hospice care is never easy, but it is one of the most meaningful parts of our mission, ensuring no dog ever faces the end of their journey alone.

As we head into summer, we are grateful for everyone who continues to support this work and stand beside us in giving senior dogs the comfort and dignity they deserve.

Free Community Class – Veteran Suicide Prevention Training – Friday June 12th

White Whiskers is honored to host S.A.V.E. Veteran Suicide Prevention Training on Friday, June 12th from 4:30–5:30pm at White Whiskers, 35 Lewis Rd, Akron, NY.

This free training is part of a coalition effort with the VA in Batavia and the VA in Buffalo, and is open to all community members, seat reservation is required.

In 2023, an estimated 17 veterans were lost to suicide every day, an urgent and heartbreaking statistic that reminds us why this work matters. Together, we can learn how to recognize warning signs and support those who may be struggling.

We are also honored to welcome back the Mothers of Veterans’ Suicide, who will be parked on-site again this year. They travel from Georgia to support and stand alongside bereaved families in powerful advocacy and remembrance.

Join us in learning, listening, and taking meaningful steps that may help save a life.

Senior Success Story – Woody the Beagle

ly

When a β€œ7-year-old” beagle was found wandering alone in the woods in Clarence, he was brought to the local dog control office with hopes that someone would come looking for him. After being posted for two weeks with no owner coming forward, the office reached out to White Whiskers to see if we could help.

That’s how Woody came to us.

After spending a week in isolation, Woody was introduced to our general dog room where the dogs roam kennel free. It quickly became clear that Woody wasn’t comfortable around other dogs and may have had very little socialization in his past. Even our tiny dogs made him nervously howl. To help him decompress and better understand his needs, Woody was placed with a foster family.

Over the next 8 weeks, his foster family learned all about Woody’s personality, habits, quirks, and favorite things. They discovered what made him feel safe, what brought him joy, and what kind of home would help him thrive. That information became invaluable as we began searching for his forever family.

Beagles are a unique breed with big personalities and an even bigger howl! Some people adore their boisterous voices, while others may find them to be a little too much. We promoted Woody everywhere we could, hoping to find just the right match. There were a few failed meet-and-greets along the way, but then Laura and Andy submitted an application.

Their beloved beagle had recently passed away, and they currently had no other dogs in the home. After texting back and forth with Woody’s foster, it quickly became clear that this could be something special.

The first meet-and-greet went wonderfully. Woody even gave kisses before they left. Then came the big test, Woody’s overnight stay.

Before long, Woody’s foster was receiving happy texts and photos sharing how well things were going. One overnight turned into a week-long stay, ending with the words we had all hoped to hear: β€œWe would love to adopt him.”

After a rough few months and an uncertain beginning, Woody is finally where he belongs β€” in a home filled with love, patience, and a family of his very own. See photos below from Woodys own Instagram!
